Footnotes

  • By tradition in the present owner's family, who are descendants of Benjamin Rush:
The painting was owned by Benjamin Rush and some time after his death in 1813 gifted by his family to the Swarthmore Pennsylvania Borough Hall, possibly because Swarthmore was part of the Springfield Township granted to Quakers by William Penn.
The present owner's grandfather rescued the painting from a fire in the Borough Hall in the 1960's. He was subsequently gifted the painting.

Benjamin Rush (1745-1813), the paintings original owner, was both a member of the Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Trained as a physician in Scotland, he served as Surgeon General in the Continental Army and later trained Merriwether Lewis in frontier medicine prior to the Lewis and Clark expedition. Lewis' medical bag contained 50 dozen of Dr. Rush's bilious pills, which contained 50% mercury, and were used frequently enough, that later archaeologists were able to retrace the trail to the Pacific.
