First edition. Fanning first visited the South Seas in 1797, and during the next 25 years captained or directed more than 70 voyages in the Pacific and around the world, visiting China, Australia, Fiji, Tonga, the Philippines, the Falklands, the Marquesas, and South Georgia. Among the islands he discovered in 1798 are Fanning Island and Palmyra, which was claimed by the Hawaiian Government in 1862. In 1829 he was instrumental in sending out the first American naval exploring expedition, and he was greatly responsible for Congress's authorizing of the Wilkes Expedition.
