Note: Fred Spratt was a well-known and respected figure in the Bay Area arts community. He was a faculty member of San Jose University from 1956-1989 and served as Department Chair for nine years. In 1993 Fred Spratt founded the Frederick Spratt Gallery in San Jose and exhibited major artists such as George Herms, Billy Al Bengston, and Robert Graham. He also launched the career of many emerging Bay Area artists. Spratt was also an influential artist and his own artwork has been exhibited widely. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art showed his "Finish Fetish" work in the 1960s and the San Jose Museum of Art mounted a retrospective of his work in 2008. Spratt recently passed away at the age of 80. Many works in this sale come from his collection.
