A rare period portrait of Crown Princess Kaiulani, the niece of Queen Liliuokalani and heir to the throne of Hawaii. After the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy in 1893, Kaiulani initiated a campaign in the U.S. to restore the kingdom. A popular figure on the world stage, thanks to her European education and tremendous sense of style, Kaiulani died at the age of 23, less than a year after the annexation of Hawaii as a U.S. territory.
