Period brown half calf over marbled boards, gilt-lettered brown spine label. Some faint foxing, mainly to preliminary and final leaves, period ownership inscription to top margin of title, front hinge cracked, binding with some general wear, but sound.
First Paris edition?, printed in the same year as the first edition. Signed and inscribed by Irving on the half-title, Madrid, April 5, 1843. In 1842 President John Tyler, with an endorsement from Secretary of State Daniel Webster, appointed Irving as Minister to Spain. The above is signed during his tenure. BAL places no priority among the two Paris imprints of 1836. BAL 10298.
