Lot Details
GRAVES, ROBERT. 1895-1985.
18 Autograph Letters Signed and 1 Typed Letter Signed ("Robert"), 25 pp, 4to and 8vo, Dela, Majorca, Spain, November 6, 1968 to June 19, 1973, to Cleopatra Usher, on personal letterhead, most with original autograph transmittal envelopes; with ALS of Beryl Graves, July 3, 1977, mild toning to a few leaves, some offset from ink, otherwise fine.

Poet, novelist, and translator Robert Graves is best remembered for his World War I autobiography Good-Bye to All That and the historical novel I, Claudius. In his later years, he struck up a correspondence with Los Angeles artist and poet Cleopatra Usher, and the two discussed literature, politics, and Graves' fragile health. In a letter dated July 14, 1970, Graves mentioned that he never pursued a friendship with D.H. Lawrence because of that author's "moral perversity." In another, he discusses his daughter, Catherine Dutton: "She's the woman who has written the most important book on nuclear politics and the crimes that go with it, and is about to help topple down the present Australian Government which was responsible for a lot of the crimes: including the attempt to put her into an insane asylum in order to get her murdered husband's patents from her, and to kill or kidnap her children."
