Follower of Sir Thomas Lawrence (Bristol 1769-1830 London)
A portrait of Miss Maria Siddons oil on canvas 23 x 19 1/4in
This painting derives from Lawrence's portrait of Maria Siddons at Woburn Abbey, England. Maria (1779-1798) was the daughter of the great tragedienne of the British stage, Sarah Siddons. Lawrence was engaged to Maria for a few short weeks before he broke it off because he had fallen in love with Sally, Maria's sister. Unfortunately, Maria was ill with consumption and died soon after.
A copy of the book Sarah Siddons by Roger Manvell accompanies this lot.
