The overwhelming majority of iron meteorites are prosaic massesnot remotely aestheticwith the current offering being a notable exception. Its provenance is the Macovich Collectionthe worlds foremost collection of aesthetic iron meteorites. Like most meteorites, this specimen originated in the asteroid belt, but approximately 45,000 years ago it was part of a small, errant asteroid that plowed into the Arizona desert with the force of more than 100 atomic bombs. While fragments were dispersed in all directions for miles, the main mass vaporized, creating the most famous and best-preserved meteorite crater in the worldthe renowned Canyon Diablo Meteor Crater near Winslow, Arizonaone mile across and nearly six hundred feet deep. Canyon Diablo (Canyon of the Devil) is the quintessential American meteorite, prized by museums and private collectors everywhere.
