Footnotes

  • Provenance: Ex. Norton Museum of Art Collection, Florida.

Compare a similar example in the Collection of The Capital Museum in Beijing, illustrated on page 137 of Shoudu Bowuguan Cang Ci Xuan (Cultural Relics in The Capital Museum/Beijing Publishing House/1997 edition). The incidence of seven scholars here may be significant. Two sets of Seven famous literati are known from Chinese Literature and Legend. The first group, known as 'The Seven Scholars of The Chien-An Period' were all poets whose work enlightened the otherwise disappointing era which characterised the final years of The Han Dynasty. The Second Group, also a set of poets, rose to prominence during the Third Century AD, and became known as the Seven Sages of The Bamboo Grove. This latter set included the enthusiastic imbiber, Liu Ling, who thought that to a drunken man the serious issues of life were about as important as duckweed on a river ('The History of Chinese Literature' by Herbert A.Giles, refers).
