  • 'For many years my main theme was the French landscape wherein trees and mountains, villages and churches, became important motifs.' (Raza quoted in Geeti Sen, Bindu, Space and Time in Raza's Vision, New Delhi 1997, p. 56). While the landscape was his formal inspiration, even in the late 1950s Raza had been tending towards abstraction: forms seem to loom out of a background, from which we pick out recognisable shapes. But after his visit to Berkeley, California, in 1962, where he came under the influence of American Abstract Expressionism, this tendency was accelerated. Here, in this work of 1964, we see the vestiges of foliage and the earth against the ink-black background, but the overall effect is of colour and shape and not figurative depiction.

Mont-Agel is in south-eastern France in the Alpes Maritimes, near Monaco, where Raza spent a good deal of time from the mid-1950s onwards.
