Footnotes

  • This fine bronze desk piece depicts the historical aeronautical achievements of Santos-Dumont, the famous Brazilian Aeroplane and airship pilot. This most impressive piece was originally commissioned by the French government in 1910 as a monument in Paris, and depicts Icarus lifting his wings, and rising above the limitations of earth. The Farman Company adopted the image because of its early associations with aircraft manufacturing. It has the full foundry cartouche and foundry numbers, and full signature G.Colin. Colin was born in Vincinnes in 1876 and as a student of the Ecole des Beaux Arts, he exhibited his work for the first time in 1899. He later studied under Valton, a highly respected master of naturalism. Valton's influence can be seen clearly in the structural and muscular detail of this fantastic example of Colin's work and he was at his prime at an age of 35 years in 1910 when he designed this bronze.
