Footnotes

  • Exhibited: Scottish Arts Council, 'Gillies Retrospective', 1970, no 164
Note: Gillies favoured the dramatic topography of Morar, Sunart and Ardnamurchan for sketching trips in the 1930's. He was prolific, unlike his companion John Maxwell, producing watercolours swiftly in a series of washes and deft passages which retain a feeling of freshness and spontaneity. Shortly afterwards, he began to map his compositions more carefully in pencil or ink.
