Sir William George Gillies, CBE LLD RSA PPRSW RA (British, 1898-1973)
'Resipol' (1938) signed, ink and watercolour, 52 x 64cm (20 1/2 x 25 3/16in).
Exhibited: Scottish Arts Council, 'Gillies Retrospective', 1970, no 164 Note: Gillies favoured the dramatic topography of Morar, Sunart and Ardnamurchan for sketching trips in the 1930's. He was prolific, unlike his companion John Maxwell, producing watercolours swiftly in a series of washes and deft passages which retain a feeling of freshness and spontaneity. Shortly afterwards, he began to map his compositions more carefully in pencil or ink.
