Footnotes

  • See illustration

By 1977 Gordon Russell was at Kingcombe designing furniture again for the first time since the 1930s. His renewed interest coincided with the retirement of Hermsen who had been with Gordon Russell Ltd. since 1928, latterly as works manager. Hermsen was a craftsman whose roots had been at the bench, but ended his career familiar with every aspect of machine production.
They began a series of designs and production initially with a yew wood dining table for Kingcombe, the pieces combined hand and machine techniques.
See Jeremy Myerson, Gordon Russell - Designer of Furniture, page 122, for the table or another version in the window at Kingcombe. Also Ken and Kate Baynes, Gordon Russell, page 63. The table can also be seen in a view of the drawing room at Kingcombe page 65.
