Footnotes

  • William Sancroft was expelled from his fellowship of Emmauel college in 1651, but later became master of the college from 1662-1664. He became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1678, and it appears that books he purchased after this date were blocked with the arms of the see of Canterbury, rather than his own arms. He initially intended to leave his library to Lambeth, but towards the end of his life decided instead to bequeth his books to his alma mater, Emmanuel College. The inscription is testament to this gift, though it is probably not in Sancroft's hand.
