BHUTAN, TIBET and SIKKIM
Four albums chronicling visits to Bhutan, Tibet and Sikkim by plant-hunter Roland Edgar Cooper, 1910s, 198 gelatin silver prints, almost all mounted, some annotated in ink, (images various sizes), with several letters, cloth and paper folder, 4to and oblong 4to (4)

Footnotes

  • Roland Edgar Cooper was appointed to the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh in 1910, and was sent to Sikkim, Bhutan and the Western Himalayas between 1913 to 1917 as a plant-hunter for A. K. Bulley. He discovered many new species, including lobelia nubigena, the original photographs of which are included in this collection. After working later in the Maymyo Botanic Garden in Burma, Cooper eventually returned to Edinburgh, becoming curator of the Royal Botanic Garden in 1934.

Includes: hand-made folder containing photographs of a 'Tibetan Priest Play' taken in 1915, with ink notes for each photograph explaining the meaning and process of the dance - "The bad characters shriek and leap about. (Imagine piruetting in bare feet on crazy paving!)"; portrait of Rhoomoo Lepeha, Cooper's head plant-collector during his travels, pictured in Sikkim in 1913; one album of the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, "Where studies of Nature's wonders are pursued and spread to the four quarters of the earth by generations of explorers, gardeners and graduates, to benefit mankind", with full tipped-in botanical notes for each image.
