Hist: or Cornwall 1760. W.B."), 8 original ink and pencil illustrations and plans (one loose), autograph letter signed from Thomas Randolph, and a note of receipt from J. Empson of the British Museum (1761) mounted inside covers, most of the plates with manuscript additions, ownership inscription of Frederick M. Williams ("Tregullow, December 24, 1857"), and note "bought at Sir Frederick William's sale at Goon Vrea, Oct. 7th, 1879", contemporary calf, defective, folio, for the Author, 1758, sold as an assocation copy

  • AN IMPORTANT COPY, WITH EXTENSIVE REVISIONS BY THE AUTHOR, AND OTHER ADDITIONS. These were obviously intended for a proposed second edition which never materialised. Includes; a 12-page index of corrections by Borlase; a lengthy note "relating to Pilch.ds & Congers" addressed on verso "To Revd. Dr. Borlase, of Ludgvan"; an engraved plate of a seal with note on verso "taken near Chester May 1766. except the head & white space under the shoulder the whole was naked, regarding the skin of a porpoise. T[homas] Pennant"; an ink drawing of Launceston by Borlase; a letter (November 10, 1756) from Thomas Randolph, vice-chancellor of Oxford University, thanking Borlase "for the valuable present you have made of Cornish fossils [described in The Natural History of Cornwall]" and mentioning that he has "ordered a cabinet to be made for them", an illustration of which is also pasted-in. In recognition of this gift the university conferred upon Borlase by diploma the degree of doctor of law.
