A pencil note on the front free endpaper, probably by William Hardcastle, the noted collector of Bewick and Newcastle imprints, claims that the illustration on page 173, signed 'J.B.' is the earliest example known of a signed Bewick woodcut. Hugo remarks that "those by Bewick are truly beautiful and equal to his very best."
