Footnotes

  • The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, of July 15, 1975, was the first joint flight of the US and Soviet space programs. After the highly competitive earlier space programs fuelled by the paranoia of the Cold War, this mission was seen as a crucial thawing of relations between the superpowers. The historic handshake, which took place once both crafts had docked, was due to take place while in orbit directly above Bognor Regis.
