Footnotes

  • The Apollo Program, launched by John F. Kennedy in 1961, made history in the field of human spaceflight. On 12 April, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first man to walk in space, prompting fears in America that the Soviet Union would overtake the USA technologically. Cold War tensions ensured that the Apollo program, originally conceived during the Eisenhower administration, was finally started. The program was the first to send manned missions beyond low orbit, Apollo 11, on July 20, 1969, was famously the first mission to successfully put man on the moon, and Apollo 17 marked the last moonwalk.
