Footnotes

  • Mark Senior was a founder member of the Staithes Group of artists who derived inspiration from the East Coast landscape and communities. He owned a fisherman's cottage at Runswick Bay which became his studio from Spring to Autumn each year. Senior studied at the Slade School of Art under Alphonse Legros who introduced him to techniques and theories emanating from Paris. He was a life-long friend of Philip Wilson Steer whose influence can be seen in this small beach study.
