  • The inscription on the reverse refers to the infamous scandal 'L’Affaire du Collier' that took place during the reign of Marie Antoinette and was one of the key events that marked the beginning of the French Revolution. It was a conspiracy conducted by the Comtesse de la Motte and her companions to extort money from the Cardinal Louis de Rohan and eventually to steal a diamond necklace through a series of machinations.
