Steel-engraved frontispiece; plate of the lakes and islands of the world; plus 102 pages of lithographed maps and plans (all but a few hand-colored), 6 of these maps are double-page and count as two numbers, many have insets. Folio (447 x 377 mm). Original publisher’s full sheep pictorially gilt. Intermittent minor toning and occasional small blemishes, f.f.e. lacking, binding rubbed with corners showing but generally sound.

Scarce 1859 edition of Colton’s general atlas in a deluxe, full leather pictorial binding. The majority of the maps pertain to the United States and include several of interest to the American West: “Nebraska and Kansas Territories,” “Oregon and Washington,” “Utah and New Mexico,” etc.
