Footnotes

  • This jardinière is very similar to the ancient Arab damascened vases depicted in Recueil de Dessins pour l'Art et l'Industrie by Adalbert de Beaumont and Eugène Collinot, with the inscription: "vases arabes et persans, en cuivre damasquiné (...) imités en fayence pour jardinières..." (ornements arabes p.6 and 54 ), published in 1859. In the catalogue of the exhibition entitled Purs Décors (Paris, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, 2007), the author refers to a ceramic plaque signed "E.C" for Eugène Collinot.

Eugène Collinot (1824-1889) and his friend, the designer Adalbert de Beaumont (d.1869), established their first workshop in 1860 in Boulogne, near Paris. In 1863 the company became faiencerie collinot & Cie. Collinot participated in most of the major international Exhibitions between 1860-1882 and received commissions from the Shah of Persia amongst others.
