Footnotes

  • Sir Thomas Byam Martin (1773-1854) served in the Royal Navy during both the French Revolution and Napoleonic War and later as a Naval administrator, holding such illustrious posts as Vice-Admiral of the United Kingdom and Admiral of the Fleet. A conservative and close friend of William IV, he sat in Parliament, representing Plymouth, for fourteen years. Martin and his wife, Catherine Fanshawe, had six children, all three of their boys served in the armed forces, two of whom, William and Henry, later became admirals.
