The interior with till lid inscribed Peter Rohn hat das gemacht den 11 Marz im Jahn 1784, and fitted with a hidden compartment, polychrome decorated with sponged trifids within cartouches flanked by stylized tulips.

    This chest is pictured in Monroe H. Fabian The Pennsylvania-German Decorated Chest, 1978, page 126, plate 81, indicating "whereabouts unknown.".

    Painted chests were rarely signed. In fact Monroe H. Fabian's research found only ten examples signed or initialed and attributed to a specific craftsman. Peter Rohn (1761-1834) was born in Nazareth Township and worked in Easton, Northampton county in the eighteenth century.
