Footnotes

  • A charming Victorian tradition, guests at a tea party signed the tablecloth and a member of the family subsequently embroidered over the signature, recording and preserving it. Of the three cloths, the earliest contains no names of significance, the middle cloth bears Dr (Ted) Wilson's signature and the later cloth the signatures of members of the "Terra Nova" expedition; Edward Wilson, Aspley Cherry-Garrard, Frank Debenham, Griffith Taylor and Captain Robert Falcon Scott.
