Footnotes

  • Initially commissioned to commemorate Napoleon's victory at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805, the Vendôme Column was a symbolic focal point for French political sentiment. The Column as it has been reproduced in this model is from 1831-71 when a figure of Napoleon in military attire as the "Little Corporal" surmounted it, under the instruction of Louis Philippe to replace the fleur-de-lys of Louis XVIII.
