Footnotes

  • This cabinet was probably made in Antwerp which was the centre for the manufacture of ebony veneered cabinets decorated with oil paintings. In the first half of the 17th century, Melchior Forchondt was the most important merchant who ordered this type of cabinet, collaborating with the painter Adriaan Van Stalbempt.

For a comparable cabinet, with paintings attributed to Adriaan Van Stalbempt and his studio, see Sotheby's London, 29th October 2003, lot 207.
