Footnotes

  • As his name suggests, Zeeman spent his early life at sea and only later turned to painting. This no doubt accounts for his technical accuracy which was owed to his obvious knowledge of shipping. His career as a painter may have been short as a consequence but was nonetheless a highly successful one, including a period in which he worked for the Brandenburg Court at Berlin.

The ship to the left of the main composition, also appears in an engraving by Nooms from his series of Thirteen Naval Scenes (see The Illustrated Barstch, vol. 6, no. 114, illus. p. 220).
