Footnotes

  • First recorded in the Antwerp guild in 1596 as a pupil of Peeter van der Hulst I, Jan Wildens became a master of the guild in 1604. After possibly travelling to Holland and on to Italy, he returned to Antwerp where he established himself as a landscape painter. He went on to collaborate with various artists such as Frans Francken II, Frans Snyders and Jacob Jordaens, working on the background landscapes for their compositions. He also occasionally worked with Sir Peter Paul Rubens and in 1640 he became one of three executors responsible for the sale of Rubens's collection.

The attenuated figures and distinctive treatment of the landscape are typical of Wildens and can be compared with his work depicting The Waters of Spa, now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid.
