Cylinder Musical Boxes
A large 'Mandoline-Piccolo' interchangeable cylinder musical box, by Paillard Vaucher et Fils,
circa 1880,
No. 6895, with single-spring lever-wind motor, double-section comb with the mandoline teeth in group of up to four, three-quarter length zither attachment with large company initials inscribed each side of the central control, on reeded gilt cast bedplate, in ebonised interior under glass dustlid, framed with double incised decoration, the rare silvered metal tunesheet bearing Wales & McCulloch name and Ludgate Hill address, listing the five cylinders, all of which are present, in finely figured and toned burr-walnut veneered case, with central splat cartouche in coromandel, kingwood, brass and mother-of-pearl inlay on the domed lid, front and sides with kingwood crossbanding, repeated to the stand top, ormolu side carrying handles, rounded corners and cylinder storage frieze drawer, ebonised moulded edges and circular ring-turned legs, on castors - 38in. (97cm) high, the stand width 39.1/4in. (100cm), the musical box width 29.1/2in. (75cm), the cylinders 13in. (33cm)
