An important exhibition-quality interchangeable cylinder musical box and secrétaire à abundant-le-stande, by George Baker & Co.,
in the transitional Louis XV-XVI taste, circa 1891,
No. 14857, with double-spring lever-wind motor, speed check, tune indicator, tune-select and double-section comb, nickel-plated fittings on finely reeded gilt cast bedplate, polished interior under 7/8-width glass dustlid, control board with nickel plaques, in figured and stained oak veneered subsidiary case bearing maker's black and gilt banner transfer to front, the imposing highly polished mahogany cabinet with empire-taste gallery to plain top, rebated moulded pediment above the twin doors featuring double inset polychrome-lacquered panels of early 19th century style country-folk at work on the harvest, each with three figures, above two short drawers, the fold-over hinged top with inset blue baise framed with black leather and gilt line border and double brass inlay, opening on the front of three long frieze drawers, each fitted to receive four cylinders, drop fronts with push-button release, flanked by triple fluted square supports as repeated above, on circular fluted and tapered legs with gilt ring tops and terminals, further applied gilt detail to sides, panel frames, top plinth and drawer fronts, and swag-drop handles, with 6 six-air nickel-plated cylinders - 53in. (135cm) high, 36in (91.5cm) wide, the depth 22in. (56cm), the subsidary case 30.3/4in. (78cm) wide, the cylinders 11in. (28cm)
