Footnotes

  • The Tin Hau Festival is celebrated every year, in reverence to Lin Muoniang, the Goddess of the Sea. According to legend Lin Muoniang would wear red robes and stand on the shoreline in order to guide the fishing boats home, even in treacherous weather conditions. After her death she was worshiped by sailors and fishermen, to protect them and keep them safe while at sea. The Goddess of the Sea, also referred to as Mazu or Matsu, the Mother Ancestor, became popular with other coastal areas in South East Asia, as well as migrant communities and is recognised by both the Daoist and Buddhist faiths.
