A "Washington Pattern" ivory chess set,
England, late 18th century,
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with baluster knopped central sections and crown finials, queens, similar but with ball finials, bishops as open mitres, knights as arched horses' heads, rooks as turrets, pawns with urn shaped central sections, in a wooden box with a sliding lid,
the king 8.5cm high, the pawn 4cm high.
