  • PROVENANCE:
Gifted by the artist to Hendrina Bouman

Hendrina Bouman is the daughter of Prof. A.C. Bouman, art critic and author of Painters of South Africa (Cape Town, 1951) and close friend and supporter of Cecil Higgs. A portrait of Dr Bouman by Higgs is illustrated in Holloway (p.31, fig.10).

On meeting Hendrina Bouman, the celebrated Afrikaans poet Uys Krige remarked "Rini, my dear, I simply cannot compose a poem about you, as you are poetry itself".

Higgs painted Rini Bouman on several occasions, and one portrait, of a young Rini Bouman in a spoon-back chair, was exhibited at Higgs's second Stellenbosch exhibition in November 1936 (Bertram 1994, p.32).
