The character of the General first appears in Kentridge's animated film, Easing the Passing (of the Hours) (1993, in collaboration with Robert Hodgins and Deborah Bell). Others of this edition are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA ref. no. 1046.2007) and the University of Iowa Museum of Art (ref. no.2001.4). One was also exhibited in William Kentridge: Selections on Paper at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (November 12, 2004April 10, 2005) and was used to illustrate the front cover of the exhibition catalogue.
