A North Russia D.F.C. group of four to Second Lieutenant L.Timmins, Royal Air Force,
Distinguished Flying Cross, G.V.R.; British War and Victory Medal (2.Lieut.L.Timmins. R.A.F.). Russia, Order of St.Stanislaus, fourth class breast badge, with swords. With uniform riband for the Russian medal. The Russian medal with silvered finish and no traces of gilding, otherwise extremely fine. (Lot)

    Leonard Timmins was from 23 Leighton Street, Wishaw, Scotland.

    His WW1 service saw him being shot down on 18.10.1918 whilst flying with Lieutenant Coulthard carrying out dawn reconnaissance. They were shot down over the Mole at Zeebrugge by Machine Gun fire at 07.05, height 300 feet and crashed into the sea, at the time it was considered they had probably drowned. He was repatriated on 13.12.1918. He then has leave from 14.12.1918 until 14.2.1919. He went on the North Russia Expedition on 14.7.1919.
    He was transferred to the Unemployed List on 15.10.1919 and then to the Unattached List 12.11.1919

    Sold with a copy of the London Gazette which erroneously spells his surname as Timmons; copy of Squadron Record Book for 202 Squadron for the date he was shot down, assorted photocopied photos and maps, and assorted details Observer and Pilot reports commenting on the missions and patrols he was detailed to, from July to September 1919, a couple as follows.

    31.7.1919 To bomb SIDING 5 and attack rolling stock with M.G. dropped two 112lb bombs on siding, and one hit obtained on house, on WEST side of SIDING. Machine-gunned SIDING 7 and buildings about 2 versts N. of siding. Encountered heavy rain storm near LIJMA, making observation difficult. Two A.A. guns firing from LIJMA very innacurately.

    4.8.1919 Two bombs dropped **** burning wood pile NORTH of bridge the other hitting sheds **** wide NORTH of bridge. 30 trucks standing in SUNA STATION, and one engine with 5 trucks under steam and facing SOUTH. Fired 300 rounds M.G. ammunition on SUNA STATION. Fired 100 rounds M.G. ammunition on SIDING 3. Fired 100 rounds M.G. ammunition M.G. ammunition on A.A. gun at LIJMA. Slight A.A. fire from LIJMA. Very innacurate.
