A Rare Russian Cavalry Officer's 1798 Pattern Sword
Reign of Alexander I (1801-1825), Early 19th Century
With fullered tapering blade in the French taste double-edged towards the point and etched, blued and gilt over half its length on each side, one side with a martial trophy and owner's coat-of-arms, and on the other with the inscription 'Vaincre ou Mourir' and owner's initials 'JMS' within a laurel wreath, the blade at the forte etched with bladesmith's name 'Schaff & Sons' in Russian, regulation gilt-brass hilt comprising heart-shaped guard, up-bent rear quillion of oval section, knuckle-guard and globular pommel (tang button replaced), and later wire-bound grip, in its black leather scabbard with gilt-brass locket and chape, the former with foliate frog-button, the latter embossed and chased with foliage on the outside 83cm. (32 1/2in.) blade
