Lot Details
A rare engraved Jacobite portrait airtwist wine glass
Circa 1750.
The round funnel bowl with the bust profile of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, the reverse with an oak tree surmounted by a crown, set on a single series stem and conical foot, 15.5cm high

Footnotes

  • According to Seddon (1995), the decoration may be attributed to Engraver B in the author's nomenclature. For the style of crown see Sotheby's, 19 December 2002, lot 70. The tree probably represents the so-called 'Boscobel oak' in which King Charles II hid from the Parliamentarian forces after the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651. The crowned oak tree and especially the oak leaf were popular Jacobite symbols
