Footnotes

  • Provenance: Bonhams, Edinburgh, 23 August 2006, lot 480. According to Seddon (1995), the decoration may be attributed to Engraver A in the author's nomenclature. It has been suggested by Peter Lole that the inscription probably refers to the Stewarts of Appin, either as a Clan or Regiment name, or as a patronymic of the Chief. Whilst the young Clan Chief of the Stewarts of Appin was not 'out' in the 1745 rebellion, the Regiment fought on the Jacobite right wing at Culloden, where the fighting was heaviest. The Clan Standard was one of the few saved from capture at the Battle and is now in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh
