Footnotes

  • Provenance: purchased from a German private collector, who acquired the present lot circa 1965-1975, by repute

The motif of the Buddha sheltered beneath a snake relates to the story of the seven days of intense rain that started on the Buddha's sixth day of enlightenment, when the serpent king Muchalinda emerged to shelter and protect the Buddha from the rising waters of a nearby lake sent by a demon to drown him, so that he could continue his meditation undistracted.
