Three figures in historical dress bears signature 'J.Cotman' (lower right) watercolour 20.5 x 28cm (8 1/16 x 11in).
The present lot can be dated to the mid 1830s by the rough handling of the paste medium in the sky and the scribbled pencil work on the ground. The three figures have been copied from a print, most likely either Dutch or Italian, taken from Cotman's own large collection. Whilst the sky remains unfinished, the work bears a signature. The most likely explanation for this is that the signature was added by one of Cotman's sons, perhaps Miles Edmund. The preceding 'J' was added later still, by a different hand again.
We would like to thank Timothy Wilcox for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
