An Unusual Brass-Barrelled Flintlock Blunderbuss Engraved With Original Irish Owner's Name
By Ketland & Co., London, Late 18th Century
With three-stage barrel turned and belled at the muzzle, fitted with side-mounted ramrod (ramrod-pipe damaged) and spring bayonet beneath, and stamped with Co. Louth registration mark 'L-H 245' along the top, the bayonet released by a catch on the finial in front of the trigger-guard, octagonal breech engraved 'London' along the top flat and 'Thos. Coleman Jun., Dundalk' along the right top flat, grooved engraved tang, signed border engraved flat bevelled lock, figured half-stock (minor splits) with teardrop-shaped apron around the barrel tang, border engraved bronze mounts comprising shaped flat bevelled side-plate decorated with a garland, butt-plate stamped with Co. Louth registration mark and engraved with an urn containing flowers on the tang, trigger-guard with foliate finial and decorated with a flowerhead on the bow, bronze fore-end cap, and iron ramrod (iron parts with some rust patination), private Birmingham proof marks and maker's mark of Thomas Ketland
