Footnotes

  • The above lot is a good example of Gillows working in a fashionable revival style and taking inspiration from the carved decoration of the late George II period, which would in the last quarter of the 19th century have undoubtedly been referred to as Chippendale Revival. The decoration echoes that on a library table from the collection of the Duke's of Beaufort at Badminton, Gloucestershire and illustrated in R.Edwards and P.Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers rev.ed., London 1954, p.251, fig.23. A related serving table appears in the Gillows Estimate Sketch Book date 1896, nearly twenty years after this sideboard was manufactured.
