Footnotes

  • AN UNUSUALLY FINE AND ATTRACTIVE ARCHIVE: Rixton with Glazebrook is a township lying on the banks of the Mersey, with Rixton taking up the western portion and Glazebrook the remainder; while the hamlet of Hollinfare, with its chapel and former chantry, lies on the boundary of the division of the two portions of the township. The present archive traces the history of these lands when in the possession of the Massey (or Mascy) family: for details of which, see VCH Lancaster, iii, 'Townships: Rixton with Glazebrook', 1907, pp.334-340. For the licence of alienation bearing the Great Seal of Philip and Mary, see the present sale, under 'Philip and Mary'.
