BERNARD HERRMANN Music and Film: Scores, manuscripts and books sold on behalf of Norma Herrmann IVES (CHARLES)

Footnotes

  • Having published on 'The Symphonies of Charles Ives' in Modern Music in 1945, Herrmann privately encouraged Ives to search for the lost manuscript of the second: "Herrmann's characteristic reaction was to find the score himself. Inside [the conductor] Damrosch's brownstone house on 8th Street 'was a great, beautiful portrait of Wagner,' Herrmann recalled. 'It said, 'To my young American friend Walter Damrosch, to whom I entrust my "Parsifal."'...Damrosch came in and said, 'Ah my boy, what can I do for you?'... I told him about the symphony. He said, 'The Ives Second Symphony... the Ives Second Symphony... Let's look, maybe it's still in the closet.' He went to an enormous closet full of packages, scuttled around, and finally pulled out - still in its wrapping - the Ives Second Symphony. It had been lying for nearly half a century in that closet. He'd never looked at it" (Smith, A Heart at Fire's Center, p.124). As Ives's letters in the present sale record, he and Herrmann then worked together on the symphony, with Herrmann supervising the Pagano's transcript. The present printed score incorporates material found in the manuscript. However the use of felt-tip pen indicates that Herrmann marked it up at a later date, probably at some time in the 1960 or 70s.
