BERNARD HERRMANN Music and Film: Scores, manuscripts and books sold on behalf of Norma Herrmann
IVES (CHARLES)
Photographic portrait signed and inscribed in a tremulous hand, in black ink ("With best wishes to Bernard Herrmann from Chas. E. Ives."), showing him half-length at around sixty years old, staring quizzically at the camera, seated in a garden chair outside a window, wearing hat, bow-tie and striped over-shirt, with a printed caption below the image 'Charles E. Ives', one page, extracted from The Musical Quarterly, left-hand edge irregular, slight creasing to lower edge and minor tears, 217 x 141 mm.

Footnotes

  • ONE GREAT AMERICAN COMPOSER TO ANOTHER: this arresting, unconventional image of Charles Ives is inscribed to Bernard Herrmann, the pre-eminent composer of film scores who did so much to champion his music. It was enclosed with Harmony Ives's letter included with Ives's other letters in the present sale, in which she writes: "There is no photograph here - The enclosed is from the Musical Quarterly - only a snapshot but is sent with kindest remembrances".

Harmony's letter is dated 10 November without specifying the year, but almost certainly dates from the 1930s. The only article on Ives appearing in the Musical Quarterly from that period is in the first issue of 1933, vol.19, Henry Bellamann's 'Charles Ives: The Man and His Music'. The article makes it clear that Ives was not in the habit of sending out photographs to admirers: "One anecdote may illustrate his aversion to all personal exploitation. I urged him to have a photograph taken for use with an article. The explosion was terrifying. For days he went about pointing a derisive finger at me, muttering, 'that man collects photographs!'". This is the Ives on display here. Although, in his capacity as brilliantly successful insurance agent, Ives helped finance the Musical Quarterly and might therefore be expected to have a stock of this image to hand, the uneven trimming is clear evidence that it was extracted from the volume itself rather than being an offprint. Another photograph exists that was, to judge from the plants in the background, taken at the same session; see the print held by Irving S. Gilmore Music Library, Yale, dated to circa 1935, reproduced on Scott Mortensen's Ives website (www.musicweb.uk.net/Ives). This other version shows a sanitized version of Ives, wearing a tailored jacket and seated centre of the picture-frame (Ives the businessman rather than, as in our picture, Ives the 'prankster-shaman').
