Footnotes

  • A remarkable copy of one of the most significant books in the English language, "a book, which if everything else in our language should perish, would alone suffice to show the whole extent of its beauty and power" (Macaulay). Its creation involved nearly fifty translators consulting a wide range of sources including Hebrew and Greek originals, earlier Latin versions, the bibles of Tyndale, Matthew, Coverdale, and Whitchurch, as well as the Bishops' Bible, the Geneva text, and the Rheims New Testament.

Though without a few preliminary leaves and the genealogies, the bible text here is complete, with only some eight leaves of the Epistles showing any kind of repair. The Old Testament is exceptionally clean, as is the title to the New Testament.

This copy was formerly at Burford Priory.

Saleroom notices

  • Approximately 25-30 leaves of the New Testament have been inserted from a copy of the 1634 folio.
