A 'stackie', Greenwich signed with initials 'E.W.C.' and dated March 1835 inscribed 'Greenwich' (below mount) watercolour 10.4 x 14cm (4 1/8 x 5 1/2in).
Provenance : Col. Rhodes Martyn Gregory
Literature: see 'E.W.Cooke, A Man of his Time', John Munday, Antique Collectors' Club, Woodbridge, 1996, plate 299, page 361 and is 'a small, vignetted version of a larger watercolour of 1833', which was one of a group recorded in Cooke's Liber (Cooke MS33).
A 'stackie' is a floating hay barge. This watercolour belongs to Cooke's 'Bonington' period, where the Thames was his nursery.
We would like John Munday for his help in cataloguing this lot.
