As a young man William Richard Beckford Miller (1769-1844) showed great promise as an artist with Sir Joshua Reynolds recommending that he study at the Royal Academy. However, he left the academy to pursue an extremely successful career in publishing. With a particular gift for gauging public taste, Miller took shares in the poems of Sir Walter Scott, was the sole publisher of the eighteen volume edition of Scott's Dryden, and paid a record price for the copyright to Charles James Fox's History of the Early Part of the Reign of James II.

His portrait is offered with a portrait of his second wife, Susanna Chapman, daughter of the Reverend Richard Chapman.
